Veiled Chameleon (Chamaeleo calyptratus)

Species Overview

Veiled Chameleons are one of the most commonly kept pet chameleons, known for their dramatic casque (helmet-like crest) and striking coloration. Native to Yemen and Saudi Arabia, these hardy reptiles adapt well to captivity when provided with proper care. They are relatively tolerant of being handled, but can hiss and occasionally bite if not

They change color for communication, mood, and temperature regulation, displaying shades of green, yellow, turquoise, and sometimes even orange or brown. Males tend to be larger and more vividly colored than females.

Hydration: Misting 2–3x/day, with a dripper system; Veileds often enjoy drinking from leaves

Diet & Feeding

Staple Insects: Gut-loaded crickets, dubia roaches, black soldier fly larvae, silkworms
Occasional Treats: Hornworms, waxworms, mealworms (use sparingly)

Supplements:

  • Calcium w/ D3: 2x/week

  • Calcium w/o D3: Every other feeding

  • Multivitamin: 2x/month
Feeding Frequency: Daily for juveniles, every other day for adults

Bonus Trait: Veiled Chameleons are omnivorous and may occasionally eat leafy greens like collard, dandelion, and mustard greens.

Special Notes on Females

Females lay unfertilized eggs even if they’ve never mated, which can shorten their lifespan if not properly managed. A healthy, controlled diet and stable temperatures can help reduce the frequency of egg-laying. Always provide a lay bin (moist sand/soil ~6–8 inches deep) to prevent egg binding.
