Species Overview

Panther Chameleons are one of the most sought-after pet chameleons thanks to their striking colors and fascinating behavior. Native to the tropical forests of Madagascar, these reptiles are known for their ability to change color, not just for camouflage—but also to communicate mood, health, or dominance.​ Color varies widely depending on the region of Madagascar the bloodline comes from (Ambilobe, Sambava, Nosy Be and Ambanja are among the most popular locales.)

Natural Habitat

  • Location: Coastal and lowland forests of northern and eastern Madagascar

  • Environment: Warm, humid, with plenty of vegetation

  • Activity: Diurnal (active during the day) and arboreal (tree-dwelling)

Size & Lifespan

  • Male Size: 16–20 inches (including tail)

  • Female Size: 10–14 inches (including tail)

  • Lifespan:

    • Males: 5–7 years

    • Females: 3–4 years

Temperament

Panther Chameleons are a shy but curious species. They prefer to watch their environment or owners from a safe distance. They are happy being left alone, but they can quickly become accustomed to handling as well.​ They do best in quiet environments.

 

Enclosure Requirements

  • Recommended Size: 24”x24”x48”h 

  • Ventilation: Screen cages are necessary to maintain airflow, but covering a few sides with solid paneling makes it easier to raise the night time humidity - especially if you live in a dry area.

  • Climbing Space: Provide plenty of sturdy branches, vines, and live plants (e.g., pothos, ficus, hibiscus)

  • Substrate: Bare bottom, paper towels, or bioactive substrate (avoid loose particles that can be ingested)

Lighting, Heat & Humidity

  • Basking Temp: 85–90°F

  • Ambient Temp: 75–80°F

  • Night Temp Drop: Down to 65–70°F is okay

  • UVB Lighting: Essential for 10–12 hours daily

  • Humidity: 40-60% during the day. 90% or higher at night.

  • Hydration: Daily misting 2–3 times a day (automatic sprayers are helpful!).

Diet & Feeding

  • Insects: Gut-loaded crickets, dubia roaches or silkworms are best. â€‹

  • Feeding Frequency: 6-8 insects daily for juveniles, every other day for adults.

  • Supplements:​ Calcium w/o D3 (Fluker's Repti Calcium is what we are using here)
